Opuntia polyacantha 'Imnaha Sunset' is an evergreen groundcover cactus / succulent with blue and green foliage. In spring and summer yellow flowers emerge followed by purple and red fruit. Plains prickly pear (Opuntia polyacantha) is found from the Canadian prairies south to northern Mexico. 'Imnaha Sunset' has pretty, semi-double ruffled flowers in lemon-yellow with dark orange centers and lighter orange stamens appearing in the early summer. Pads are round to oval in varying lengths from 1 - 4 inches with dense, orange spines up to 2 inches long. Growth habit is 4 to 12 inches tall and up to 24 inches wide. Polycantha means 'many thorns'. Plant in full sun in sharp draining soil.
A Cistus introduction. A common native of western dry lands, these found in northeastern Oregon's Imnaha Canyon. They have round to oval pads -- from 1-4" long with dense, orange spines (polycantha means "many thorns) up to 2" long -- and form spreading mats to 4-12" tall and up to several feet wide. Early summer flowers are, in this selection, yellow with orange stamens and particularly abundant. Frost hardy at least into USDA zone 4.
