Loropetalum chinense is known as Chinese witch hazel or fringe flower. It is a beautiful semi-evergreen to evergreen shrub with long-blooming, fragrant, spidery, fringed flowers in white and shades of pink. ‘Snow Dance’ has lovely green leaves and pure white flowers that bloom profusely in spring and sporadically throughout the growing season. Grow in containers and protect in winter or, in coastal BC, plant in well-drained soils in a protected location. Can be popular with hummingbirds. Tolerant of dry soils once established. Chinese witch hazel (?? or jìmù) has a long history of use in Chinese traditional medicine.
Hassle free and easy witch-hazel relative. This odd little evergreen is a large shrub or small tree, to 6-8' if left on its own, but easily pruned to any size. New leaves emerge with red-maroon tips fading to lime. In spring, white, fringe-like flowers cover the foliage. Rich soil in full to part sun with regular summer water. Frost hardy in USDA zone 7.
