Nursery contributed plant descriptions

A creeping little plant found in lowland and subalpine damp or boggy places throughout New Zealand. The flowers appear from September to January; the attractive orange drupes ripen from February onwards. This is nothing like it's huge cousins, a charming well behaved plant. ZONE 7
Unlike its 'Super sized cousin', this gunnera is a 'mini mat' of attractive, rounded leaves with bronzed new growth/winter color for pond edge or wet spot…Let it roam! Nice for texture alone…Bright red berries in winter put it into the 'wowser' category! First saw this at the pond edge at Heronswood, in berry on a misty day – Outstanding!! Don't have a wet spot? How about cascading from a pot that sits in a saucer of water??
Think of your typical dinosaur food then think of the opposite. This tiny perennial with chocolate leaves reaches only 3” in height, spreading slowly. Prefers damp sites and bright light for best foliage color. Wonderful in pot combinations or in the ground near the leaky faucet or water feature. Can handle some heat as long as nights are generally cooler so not a favorite for the southeastern United States. Also a fine subject for partially submerged pots, e.g., the way one might grow carnivorous plants. Late season fruit creates a wonderful contrast and lasts into winter. Protect from tiny grazing New Zealand dinosaurs. Frost hardy in the upper teens °F, USDA zone 8b.
