Brunsvigia comptonii [Tankwa Karoo (5 yr 2025)] plant details
Nursery contributed plant descriptions
Brunsvigia comptonii is a rare dwarf candelabra lily from the driest part of South Africa where bulbs will bloom if they receive 100 mm of rain through the summer! It blooms in late summer or fall with open inflorescences of flared, trumpet-shaped, fragrant, deep pink or pink and white flowers. This candelabra lily also has incredible tongue-like leaves that emerge in fall and winter and look like a giant starfish with red-edged leaves pressed to the ground. Keep on the dry side when dormant in summer perhaps watering only once a month. Plant the bulb mostly buried with the neck just above the soil. This is a non-hardy bulb that can be grown as a houseplant or in a heated greenhouse or sunroom. It's perfect for those interested in bulbs and houseplants and for succulent lovers looking to branch out. Bulbs can reach adult blooming size around 6 years old.
