Nursery contributed plant descriptions

The classic 'Bishop of Llandaff' is the dahlia that started the current interest in burgundy-leaved dahlias. 'Llandaff' has rich red, peony-type flowers that are four inches across. They are held on black stems to about three feet with more finely dissected foliage than the other Bishops. Three options for winter starting with easiest and safest: 1. grow in a pot and move to a frost-free area, 2. lift tubers and store, 3. leave in the ground in well-drained, sunny beds under a mound of fallen leaves.
Introduced in the 1920s, this once-again-popular dahlia is the source of the genetics for the now famous Bishop series of dark leaf dahlia varieties. Bishop of Llandaff's appeal stems from the startling contrast between the semi-double vermilion-red blooms and cut-leaf eggplant-black foliage. Happily, it also needs no staking and performs well in the South. On the Royal Horticultural Society's 2004 Top Plants of the last 200 years, Bishop of Llandaff has also received the RHS Award of Garden Merit - quite an honor.

Dark-leaved dahlias are hot these days, thanks to this inspiring original. With cut-leaf, burgundy-bronze foliage and glowing scarlet, almost-single flowers sparked by a ring of vivid yellow stamens, 'Bishop' has starred at Wave Hill, Heronswood, the Denver Botanic Garden _ and here. How can you garden another summer without growing it yourself?
Riveting rich red flowers on dark dissected foliage. One of the best of the dark leaved varieties and always a sellout. 4' tall x 2' wide
This stylish dahlia has greenish bronzy-black leaves and deep orange-scarlet flowers, a good contrast and just the color for fall. To 3 ft tall or so. You may lift them in winter or leave them in the ground if your soil is very well drained. Full sun and normal summer water. Cold hardy to USDA zone 7; lower if mulched.
