Scilla litardierei plant details

Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Scilla litardierei, the amethyst meadow squill or Dalmatian scilla, is a late spring to early summer-blooming bulb from the Balkans with spikes of sky blue to lavender blue tiny, star-shaped flowers with blue ovaries. The inflorescence resembles that of a grape hyacinth but airier and more open. Its late bloom season is valuable for continuing the spring show into the beginnings of summer. It will bulk up and naturalize given time. Grow it through ground covers or plant along pathways or at the front of the border. The hardiness of this bulb is still being tested, it seems, with many sources suggesting zone 4 and others zone 6. If you plant it in zone 4 or 5, as insurance, mulch it heavily with a foot of leaves.
