Sporobolus heterolepsis 'Gone with the Wind'

Sporobolus heterolepis 'Gone with the Wind' is a North American native known as the prairie dropseed. It is an ornamental grass with arching, hair-like foliage with wispy aromatic tan flower panicles in late summer that are fragrant and are said to smell like a combination of coriander, popcorn, honey, sunflower seeds, and melted wax, if you can imagine that! The foliage takes on red tones in late fall. This seed strain is more compact than the species offering a nice clumping habit 36-40 inches tall by 20-24 inches wide. Fantastic as a mass planted ground cover. Heat and drought tolerant due to its deep roots. Tolerant of periods of wet so great in rain gardens. As the name suggests, provides valuable movement in the garden or container as it sways in the breeze. Attracts song birds. A Canadian native from Saskatchewan to Quebec.
