Arisaema fargesii, also known as the Chinese cobra lily, is one of the easiest to grow and most spectacular of the genus. Giant, glossy green trifoliate leaves, similar to A. candidissimum, emerge in late spring followed by 18 inch tall flower stalks topped with a large wine-red pitcher (spathe) with dramatic white striping with a long, thread-like whip forming at the tip. Well worth collecting! Arisaema are known as cobra lilies or jack-in-the-pulpits. There are only two North American species but many in Asia. They grow in moist, shaded, forested habitats and are great for adding cool foliage and floral intrigue in the shade or woodland garden where they can rise up and through other shade plants. In colder climates they can be grown in pots and protected in winter. Keep just above freezing. In pots, plant in a moist but free-draining mix of coarse bark and pumice or perlite. Pull back on watering when dormant.
Easy to grow species from China with glossy, trifoliate leaves topped by 18” stalks with burgundy-purple hoods with contrasty white striping, terminating with a dramatic red thread curving down from the top of the hood! Bold and exotic in part shade, decently drained soil that is moist during the growing season.
Also from Mojmir these are very interesting, sometimes producing a single leaf of Elephant Ear proportions, others send up three leaflets, much like candidissimum, and some are intermediate with a large central leaflet and two smaller ones at the sides, flowers are brown striped like elephas with a candidissimum spadix. Magnificent, they looked tender as hell to me but Mojmir insists they are hardy for him, and it has been fantastic in Punnett's garden; I'd still plant em deep and near the house. ZONE 5
Blooms: spring-summer, brown & white striped/ large, glossy, foliage Zone 5-9. 24", china, part shade-shade, moist, well drained
One of the prettiest of the arisaemas -- we say this mostly because we have it -- this 24" perennial has been a beautiful and reliable addition to our shade garden it its compound leaves consisting of many narrow leaflets, in this form, banded in the center with silver. These can be late to emerge, sometimes not showing until late summer, so plant away from overactive shovels. Requires shade and summer dampness but no winter puddles. Frost hardy in USDA zone 7 and possibly colder.
