A deciduous rhododendron with an upright habit. 2-inch, VERY fragrant, tubular flowers open before it leafs out. Trusses are formed with 12 flowers. Native to Caucasus and Eastern Europe. Has also naturalized in parts of the British Isles.
Orange buds open to yellow fragrant flowers, orange-red fall color
A deciduous shrub with an open, upright habit. The oblong leaves to 5" long are sparsely covered on both sides with stiff, flat hairs. The delightful, fragrant, 2" yellow flowers open before the leaves. These tubular-shaped blooms are extremely sticky on the outside and are carried in trusses of up to 12 blooms. Very, very nice. One of the classic deciduous Azaleas is this sweet-scented species from the hills of Turkey. This makes a multi-branched sturdy shrub much like the familiar Exbury Azalea but with a fragrance that will waft through the garden when you have a sizeable plant. Good fall color.
