Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This stewartia is probably the finest for general cultivation. The bark flakes off like a sycamore and has patches of creamy gray, brown, and orange. The flowers are white and have orange stamens. The green foliage turns flaming crimson and yellow in fall. This is a small 20'-40' tree of the greatest qualities. Larger sizes available at nursery.
This is an outstanding specimen for true four season beauty! This gorgeous, 20-40' multi-trunked, spreading tree comes to us from Japan. Dark-green serrated foliage is the perfect foil for the large white camellia-like flowers which bloom all summer. In autumn the leaves turn bright colors from yellow to red to purple. This specimen is interesting in winter too with its attractive, flaking, cinnamon-colored bark. With a proper pruning schedule, this beauty can be held to a 12' shrub. This is a prize for any garden. Japanese Stewartia, also called Deciduous Camellia, is one of the most sought out shrubs in the nursery trade because of its full year-round appeal. In the late spring or early summer, Camellia-like blooms cover the plant and in the fall the leaves turn a beautiful orange with hints of red. The bark really makes a show during the winter after the leaves drop with round colorful sections of the bark alternating between light and dark in a random pattern, although of course the bark patterns are beautiful in all seasons.
With pruning, Japanese Stewartia can be kept smaller and shrub-like or left on its own to develop into a small to medium sized tree. These make a fantastic street tree because they require little pruning or maintenance and display such a wide variety of colors throughout the year.

Stewartia is in the Camellia family and the two are closely related with similar flowers and habits, except that Stewartia is much more cold hardy and deciduous.

Propagating Japanese Stewartia
Best propagated through seed, collect the seed from the pods as they start to dry out. Plant in well drained beds in the fall and protect with a screen so animals don't eat them when they start to germinate. Repot the seedlings into their own containers or plant out the following winter.

Deciduous tree with attractive exfoliating gray, red and orange bark for winter effect. White camellia-like flowers all summer, and fall color ranging from yellow to red and scarlet.
Among the most desirable of all deciduous landscape trees. Camellia-like flowers in early summer. Striking bark patches that resemble pieces of a puzzle. Diminutive mature size, ideal as a small specimen tree. Red, yellow, and orange autumn leaf colors. This taxon is the ideal landscape tree - the complete package. Our strain is originally from the vicinity of Nikko Park in Japan, and has survived the extremely harsh winter lows of the UP in Quinnisec, Michigan. We're talking 35 below zero! Check out their amazing root systems, pot up or plant them out, and make some money.
This superior tree has camellia-like blooms, textured leaves, and exfoliating bark. Excellent fall colors of yellow, orange, and red. Grows 8'-10' in ten years, 25-40' eventually. Awards: First Class Certificate, and Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society. Recommended by: the Ohio Plant Selection Committee, the United States National Arboretum

This single or multitrunked small tree develops into one of the most beautiful specimen plants for the landscape. Many white, cup-shaped flowers with bright yellow anthers adorn the branches in July. A superb show of golden red leaves appear in fall, and then the beautiful winter silhouette displays its attractive patterned and sometimes flaking bark. Great for creating interest in your winter garden with its subtle textures and colors. This eventually will be a 40' tree with a 25' spread.
