Nursery contributed plant descriptions

One of the most beautiful trees in our garden. S. monodelpha has incredible flaking, tan, orange bark. The dark green foliage turns brilliant orange, purple and red. Each plant of S. monadelpha has a different fall color. The flowers are small, white and camellia looking.
The 1-2" white flowers of this large shrub/small tree have violet-colored anthers in the center, and the cinnamon bark peels in thin flakes. S-PSh/M
Tall Stewartia differs from the more available Stewartia pseudocamellia by having a smoother reddish brown bark and smaller flowers. It has good maroon fall color, even in the South. This is probably more heat tolerant than Japanese Stewartia, but does not tolerate wet or compacted soil.
White flowers in summer, orange-red fall color. Peeling cinnamon colored bark. Zones 6-8
A lovely small to medium tree (to 25'), with many small white camellia like blossoms in early summer, arresting red fall color, and striking winter bark. 4' plants for fall shipping.
This is a gorgeous deciduous tree with many fascinating features. In summer its single white flowers with violet anthers appear at the leaf axils. It is perhaps best known for its 2" long leaves which turn an outstanding shade of brilliant red in the fall. When the flowers and leaves are gone, it's hard not to notice the coppery flaking bark on the trunk of older specimens. This tree will eventually be 20-25' tall in cultivation. Does best with partial shade in hot summer areas.

Small to medium, deciduous tree with the flaking bark that makes Stewartias so wonderful. Summer flowers are single and white followed by egg-shaped fruits. Well drained soil in sun to part shade with summer moisture and care not to overwater. To 10-15' in x 8-10' in 10 years. Frost hardy in USDA zone 6.
Most fabulous and exceptional of ornamental trees. It is with a heightened sense of exhilaration that these words pour forth - Stewartia monadelpha. Words that rest on my lips like the lazy sun-warmed skin of my paramour. Smooth deeply tanned bark, white flowers in June and great fall color.
