Stachyurus 'Magpie' plant details

The dream shrub is one that looks gorgeous day to day, with variegated foliage that holds its own throughout the season, while also putting on a spectacular, unreal show when in flower. The long dangly flowers in spring are too beautiful, like the entire shrub has been draped in clusters of pearls. Fall foliage can put on a colorful show as well, turning rosy or golden. Hard to resist.

Stachyurus 'Magpie' is a broadleaf deciduous shrub with green, red, variegated and white foliage. In spring cream and yellow flowers emerge. Attracts bees making it an excellent addition to pollinator gardens. Grows well with sun - mostly sun and regular water. Does well in well-drained soil.

Nursery contributed plant descriptions

We take cuttings every year but only a few root. Not difficult once rooted. This large shrub has beautiful variegated leaves that are mid- green with yellow margins.
Lovely and unusual deciduous shrub, to 6' or so tall and wide, with purple-red stems and variegated leaves, long and pointed with large creamy margins and red tints in new growth. Blooms as other Stachyurus, with long dangling racemes of cream-to-yellow flowers in early spring. Charming over a bank. Sun to afternoon shade with plentiful summer water. Frost hardy in USDA zone 7. From china, these are listed as both S. praecox or S. chinesis: we lean toward chinensis.
