At home in sun or shade, this moderately-spreading 10-12' footer makes a fine hedge or container plant with its shiny 12" leaves. S-Sh/M/contain
Pseudosasa japonica, commonly known as Arrow Bamboo, is best suited for locations with dappled sun. However, it thrives in sunny locations when it is watered regularly and will also grow in dense shade. P. japonica is ideal for hedges and screens due to its large leaves, which grow thick enough to create a solid hedge even when the grove is only a few feet thick. The leaves can be up to a foot long and two inches wide, supported by culms often less than a 1/2 inch thick. The stems are almost perfectly straight with little variation in diameter for the bottom third. The nodes aren't as large as other species, making the canes more useful as plant stakes. The perfectly straight nature of the canes gives it the common name 'Arrow Bamboo.'

P. japonica can be easily contained by bamboo barrier and trenches because the rhizomes tend to stay closer to the surface than many other bamboos of the same size. However, the roots are deep, allowing this bamboo to survive in sandy or dry conditions. This is one of the few bamboo species tolerant of salty (coastal) air and also appears to be one of the easiest plants to grow with little care.
Habit
Arrow Bamboo is mostly upright with the top of each cane bending slightly with the weight of the foliage starting after the second year of growth. The full-sized canes tend to not produce branches on the bottom half, however smaller canes throughout the grove produce leaves to keep a solid hedge.

Identification
Pseudosasa japonica is easy to identify because of its large leaves and straight canes. Like other Pseudosasa, it has only one branch per node with sheaths that often cover the branch for several years.

Straight through the heart, so goes this spine. This bamboo could be yours but now is mine. to 18’
Arrow Bamboo (Pseudosasa Japonica) Arrow Bamboo is an easy-to-grow running bamboo; relatively fast spreader. It produces large coarse-textured foliage, in clusters of four to twelve leaves near the tips of the branches. It is glossy, dark green above, glaucous below, and wedge-shaped at the base. The leaf sheaths are persistent. Arrow Bamboo has been reported to make excellent hedges of heights up to 18'. Great for all situations from the container to the hedges. Hardy to 0 °F.
