Seldom offered eastern US woodland wildflower with distinctive double-lobed leaves (resembling a pair of kidneys) crowned in April with cup shaped, seven petaled white flowers with prominent yellow stamens. Forms deciduous clumps 8” tall and 18” wide in well-drained, humus rich, moist soil in part shade to shade (best under deciduous trees). Can be massed for ground cover.
Zn 5. Blue-green foliage with white flower.
Named in honor of Thomas Jefferson, third president of the United States, this early Spring flowering plant has charming white, ephemeral flowers and set a unique seed pod that resembles a little hooded pouch. The plant itself however is not ephemeral at all and provides great foliage in part to full shade all Summer. The common name is "Twinleaf" because of its attractive double leaf structure. Plants are moderate( 12-18") in height and will soon form a colony from self seeding.
Jeffersonia diphylla is a delightful, choice, clump-forming, eastern North American native plant with delicate stems holding aloft two-lobed leaves. The flowers are white and cup-shaped. They do not last for long but they are charming when they flower and the clump of foliage provides a neat mound afterwards. Perfect for a woodland setting.
An American native found in many states east of the Missouri River, in some of which endangered.The pure white flowers are 1" across and similar to the single bloodroot, lasting couple of weeks as well.The main attraction here are the unique leaves, divided into halves. With their coarsely toothed edges they look like butterflies. Although they grow in alkaline soil in the wild, they adapt well to our rather acidic soil here in Oregon. 2-3/8" square and 5" deep pots.
A choice plant with l" wide pure white flowers, named for Thomas Jefferson Twinleaf is one of the finest native American plants and has a distinctive quality all its own, I wish the arabidopsis folks would double the petals which should make the flowers longer lasting. The only other species in the genus, Jeffersonia dubia, is found in Japan.
Blooms: spring-summer, white, blue-green w/ red tinge foliage Zone 5-9. 12", Eastern US, part shade-shade, moist, well drained
An eastern wildfl. "beloved by all who grow it" (B.Miles); though each small white spring fl lasts but a day, the oddly divided leaves, looking like "green butterflies" remain decorative for many months ;
