Seiryu Japanese Maple is an exciting upright lace leaf variety! The finely dissected green foliage is bright green with red undertones. Seiryu' is the only fully upright green laceleaf Japanese Maple variety and has a very distinct appearance. It has the medium-sized form of upright Japanese Maple varieties but also includes the delicate lacey foliage of many weeping varieties. These usually look best when grown with multiple trunks that twist and bend around each other to form a wider shrub-like plant, like in the picture below.
Often used for bonsai because the upright nature makes it easier to work with than other laceleaf Japanese Maples.

This is an upright green lace leaf maple. This plant has fine textured leaves that look like the lace leaves, but it is an upright tree to 15’. Great yellow fall color.
This cultivar is in both the dissectum group and palmatum group because it is an upright tree and a lace leaf but not a weeping maple. In Japanese the name means ‘blue-green dragon’. This lovely and graceful maple is one of the few upright lace leaf maples. The dissected leaves give this cultivar an overall look of delicacy. Seiryu starts out light green in the spring turning a beautiful lawn green in the summer and then evolves to a crimson red fall display. The lacy leaves are smaller than most dissectum weepers. Though it looks delicate this hardy maple can take full sun to mostly shade and everything in between. The natural growth habit is tree-like with multiple branches that move with the wind. In 10 years Seiryu may reach 10-11’ tall and 6’ wide. Not really a shade tree – more wispy-like allowing filtered sun to pass through. For this reason Seiryu can handle the wind. This maple is so different from other Japanese Maples it can be the focal point of a garden because it is so unique. Once established this cultivar is hardy to USDA zone 6. A collector’s must.
