Pineapple Guava, Feijoa, or Guavasteen is an evergreen perennial shrub or small tree in the myrtle family. Although not a true guava, they are closely related to the tropical guava and originate from temperate South America. Growing up to 20 feet in height, Pineapple Guava is slow growing and is most typically seen as a shrub of 6 feet. The fruit of this plant is egg-sized, juicy, and tropical in flavor. Reminiscent of pineapple, apple, and mint in flavor, it’s cultivated commercially in several countries like New Zealand. Although the Pineapple Guava is an evergreen, the trees require a cool winter period in order to flower and fruit, so these trees perform best in temperate and subtropical climates. Cold hardy to zone 8 and above, or to 10 degrees Fahrenheit.
Zn 8. White flowers with red accents. Edible fruit
Many clones are not self-fertile and needs another pineapple guava to act as the pollinator. The green fruit is abundant if the flowers have been pollinated properly, One of the only guava with a Pineapple flavor. The fleshy floweers are edible as well and have an unforgetable honey/perfume/pineapple flavor that the birds love as well but generally do little damage to the crop. Depending on the temperature, it ripens in 4 to 7 months.
"Pineapple Guava" is an easy-care fruiting plant for container growing. This drought tolerant plant is an evergreen shrub with leathery green leaves and silvery undersides. Sweet, edible flowers appear May through June and the kiwi-sized fruit has waxy green skin and soft succulent flesh similar to a pear in texture. The green fruit develops a sweet fragrance even before it fully ripens in the fall. Plants need to be subjected to cool night temperatures from the 20's- 50's for successful flowering. "Pineapple Guava" tastes like a cross between pineapple and guava with a hint of mint. Cut the fruit in half and scoop the pulp with a spoon for a delicious treat. Fruiting starts 3-5 years after planting. Although somewhat self-fertile, we recommend planting two for best pollination. Feijoa is remarkably pest-and disease-resistant. Also known as Acca sellowiana.
