One of the standards of the Japanese maple world. The foliage is deep purple in spring-summer. Will eventually get 20'x15' and will have glorious red fall color. Nursery only. Too big to ship.
The lobed leaves of this handsome upright 15-20' grower are a wonderful deep-dark-red and unlike some, they keep their color throughout the season. In autumn the foliage turns a stunning crimson-red. This elegant tree is hardy, heat tolerant and very attractive as well; wonderful as a specimen or planted in groups. S-PSh/M
Bloodgood Japanese Maple is one of the hardiest of the Japanese maples, tolerating sun well.  The foliage is a beautiful burgundy red throughout summer, turning a brilliant red in fall. Bloodgood is a favorite of landscapers and homeowners alike due to the beautiful three season colors. Bloodgood Japanese Maple makes a stunning specimen tree for your landscape!
Among the most popular of the large-leaved, red-purple Japanese maples, this industry standard holds its color very well into the late summer. Deeply divided and finely toothed leaves go bright crimson in fall. Prominent, bright red fruits ornament the tr
Bloodgood' is probably the most well-known red leaf Japanese Maple variety because of its well rounded form, ease of growth, and good leaf color retention. Red colored stems give way to dark red and purple leaves in the spring that turn bright red or even orange-red in the fall before the leaves drop. The red color is much better in full sun but gardeners in hot climates should consider planting this Japanese Maple where it will get morning sun and afternoon shade.
Redleaf Japanese Maples are so popular because they produce a color hue unmatched by any other plant in addition to their famous graceful branching and delicate leaves. Plants look fantastic even when they are left alone but with a little selective pruning 'Bloodgood' Japanese Maples can be the most attractive plant in any landscape by wide margins.

Care and Receiving Your Tree
Like other plants that are shipped bare root you want to plant your tree as soon as possible. When planting be sure to spread the roots out a little so they are not clumped together at the bottom of the hole. Japanese Maples want the top of their root crown to be covered with just an inch of soil - be careful not to apply heavy mulch directly on top of the roots as this can suffocate them. Water heavily as soon as you plant your tree but after that be careful not to overwater this beautiful specimen - Japanese Maples prefer long but less frequent watering. During the growing season we water our established trees for two hours once per week, depending on the climate and how hot/dry the weather is (maybe a little more frequently during the hottest part of the year and less frequently during spring and fall when it is cooler). If you are growing your Japanese Maples in containers be sure to use a well-drained soil mix (not peat or compost based, bark based soils do best) and water whenever the soil starts to dry out.

Japanese Maples do best when fertilized in the spring, we recommend a slow release pellet like Osmocote Plus in April. Don't apply fertilizer later than mid-June because it will encourage too much late season growth that will not have time to harden off enough for winter. The exact formula doesn't matter too much, we usually use 15-10-10 but any other works fine for Japanese Maples. Osmocote is the brand we use because it releases steadily for several months and so there is very little risk of over-fertilizing your plants.

This plant deserves its rank as one of the most popular Japanese Maples and ornamental trees. 'Bloodgood' has deep red leaves that mature to a rich purple in early spring. The color retention through the hottest summer months is notable, as well. Fall time brings a beautiful crimson color to the foliage. Dark red leaf stalks and red fruits add to its intrigue. This hardy, upright maple is always in high demand due to its many attractive attributes. Growth Rate fast
'Bloodgood' is one of the most popular red-leafed palmatums that is also easy to overwinter. It is the standard to which other maples are compared. Basically, it is a no-fuss tree that grows to 15 feet in 10 years. Its leaves emerge a deep red in spring, and keeps its color all growing season. It does not "bronze out" as many do. Grows well in full sun to part shade with very little leaf scorch.
Bloodgood is the standard by which all other upright red-leaf varieties are judged. It is a very good deep red or black-red and holds its color into late summer. Bright red seed pods add to the attraction of this tree. Because of its strength, size, and overall appeal, the demand for this tree is very high. This tree is also heavily grown for its seed, which always germinates into a very uniform strain of red palmatum. Seedlings will not be exact clones and will not hold their dark red color into late summer like the parent. Clones of this tree are produced by grafting and rooted cuttings.
Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood' - The most famous of the red upright Japanese Maples. Deep purple-red color is held through the summer better than most. It is a vigorous tree to 25 feet or more, faster than most cultivars, and it has a graceful, majestic form at maturity. Grafted Japanese Maples
This is the hardiest and most popular of all the upright cultivars of Red Japanese Maple. Smaller ones are perfect to shift into a #1, larger ones into a #5 or #10. Fibrous roots on all assure rapid spring growth and turnover for your business.
Palmatum Group - red. This popular cultivar maintains its red leaf color longer into the summer than most. It is one of the darkest reds of any cultivar. Brighter red fall colors, and dark purple twigs and stems add winter interest. Originated at Bloodgood Nursery in Long Island, NY. Grows 8-10' in ten years, it eventually reaches 20' tall or more. The foliage of this delicate Maple emerges solid red and matures to rich green with a definite red edge. A beautiful selection and an Almost Eden exclusive introduction!
Small round headed tree, new growth in spring is purplish and holds it color well throughout summer, may turn a bronze color in fall. One of the most popular red Japanese maple on the market.
Has been in production in this country well before World War II and remains an often requested cultivar. Grown for its dark red, large palmate leaves and strong upright branching structure. Fall colors are bright crimson.
Leaves hold deep red-purple color through summer, turn dark crimson in fall. USDA zones 5-9.
The warhorse of the red palmatums, Bloodgood keeps its good red color all summer, grows dependably to 20' with regular branching. Nobody complains about this one. Zone 5. This excellent photo was taken by Michael Healy.
Acer Bloodgood is one of the most sought after Japanese Maples. It has reliable growth and continual color. For sale are seedlings in the lot pictured here. Because they are Bloodgood seedlings, there will be some variation in leaf shape and color (this is part of the fun!). Each seedling is unique but strongly resembles the parent. More green will show through on new growth and in low light conditions (the red will be faded after been cooped up in a box, but will return). They are fast growing and perfect for bonsai or specimen trees. Part shade is necessary in warm climates. For sale are plants in small pots (as pictured). Most are between 6" and a foot tall. WE CANNOT SHIP LIVE PLANTS INTERNATIONALLY!
PALMATUM, red. The deepest red leaf color of the palmatum type cultivars envelops this upright, vigorous tree, presenting a display second to none. 'Bloodgood' is especially fine in holding its color into late summer when so many of the others turn green. Then there's 'Bloodgood' in the fall--the fire-red color defies description! Wait, there's winter, the bark is black-red, and in the proper setting, looks absolutely elegant.
