"A hybrid between two hardy species, E. crista-galli and E. herbacea, this larger, more shrublike coral bean tree, to 5 ft x 5 ft, thrives and blooms in terminal panicles of saturated ‘come kiss me’ red. A hummingbird magnet, of course! Rare winters can damage the twigs but recovery is fast when this selection gets growing in mid spring. Sweet. Best in sun to part shade in rich, well-drained soil with regular summer moisture. Top hardy in upper USDA zone 8; root hardy into zone 7 with reports of recovering in upper zone 6.
