This hardy ginger relative has dark leaves with deep red reverses in clumps with showy, thick, purple-brown stems. Roscoea purpurea ‘Brown Peacock' has lavender, orchid-like flowers on the top of the stalks in mid summer. It can be used as a tropical element or in mixed part shade beds. A good container plant.
Leaves and stems of this Zingiber relative are flushed with mahogany-purple and emerge May or June, topping 10”-16” tall and slowly forming a well behaved clump of stems. Pinkish purple flowers are large for the genus and orchid like June>July. AM sun to light shade is best in moist, organic, well drained soil; a woodland jewel!
