South African iris relative found on rocky sandstone slopes, and sometimes heavy soil, of the Roggeveld area of the Northern Cape. Forms evergreen clumps of blue-green, sword-shaped leaves to 4-5 ft. May-June (in the Northern Hemisphere) violet to almost red bell-shaped flowers with yellow-streaked throat appear on an elongated spike. Summer drought tolerant. Provide full sun for best flower display. Hardy to USDA zone 8a.
