Attractive sedge native to upland areas throughout the west from B.C. down into New Mexico where it is important year-round forage for Elk. Yellow-green shiny leaves are upright, then arching in loose clumps, up to a foot tall; shorter in harsher environments, slowly spreading by underground runners. In early summer short solitary flowering stems bear golden clusters of frilly flowers, maturing to brown seeds. Grows best in exposed sites and open woodlands with well drained soil. Tolerant of both deep snow cover and summer drought. Hardy to USDA zone 5.
