    Nursery contributed plant descriptions

The Scarlet Ball Cactus (Parodia or Notocactus haselbergii) is native to Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina in Brazil, thriving in altitudes ranging from 200 to 1500 meters. Found in grasslands on rocky plains or outcrops, its striking appearance includes bright green, globular stems adorned with dense, silver-white spines. This solitary cactus, sometimes forming clusters with age, blooms vibrant red flowers in late winter. A favorite among succulent enthusiasts, it faces threats from habitat loss due to agricultural activities. As a fast-growing cactus, it's relatively easy to cultivate, requiring well-draining soil, sunny positions, and minimal watering during winter. With a minimum tolerated temperature of -5°C, this cactus adds charm to indoor and outdoor gardens, provided it receives proper care and occasional repotting.
