Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Western sweetroot or Sweet Cicely, is an interesting, upright, woodland perennial in the carrot family. It is found growing in the moist woods of the northwestern United States. It features dark-green, divided leaves which are borne on a long petiole. Delicate, flat-topped flower heads with many small, yellow flowers. The seeds ripen into black seeds while the leaves are still green. Used by many Native American groups for a variety of medicinal uses, this plant has a very strong black-licorice scent. This is a unique and fascinating plant for the woodland garden. Sh/M
