Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This is a wonderfully unique broadleaf evergreen tree for warm climates. This Asian fruit tree usually reaches 15-30' high with a nice loosely rounded shape. The unusual, dark-green somewhat leathery leaves are alternately arranged and the margins vary from entire to serrate. A dioecious plant requiring male and female plants (ours are unsexed seedlings). When male and female trees are present, the resulting fruit is a very dark-red to deep-purple knobby half-inch drupe. The juicy fruits are very sweet-tart with a single seed at the center. This is an important economic tree in Asia used for fresh and dried fruit, juice, baiju (Chinese liquor) and dye. This is also a nitrogen fixing plant. S-PSh/M
