Astrophytum myriostigma var. nudum (R.Mey.) Backeberg Bishop's Miter, Bishop's Cap, Mitra, Bonete de Obispo There have been over 140 species, subspecies, varieties, forms, and cultivars published in this genus and it is likely that most are invalid. Variations of A. myriostigma which are devoid of white flecks occur in the wild. Over the years, nurseries have selected for this characteristic, the result being that these should probably be labeled A. myriostigma 'nudum'. In addition, most of these are what some would label Astrophytum myriostigma var. quadricostatum 'nudum', but some will likely develop a fifth rib with additional growth. Often listed as a variety or form, but is now considered by some to be just one variation on the theme. In other words, it probably doesn't meet the strict definition of a variety. Regardless, it's distinctive in appearance and is highly prized.
