Nursery contributed plant descriptions

An especially ornamental, slow growing shrub reaching 9'x 9'. Native to the dry, granitic mountains of California, Southern Oregon and Nevada. Evergreen leaves are thick, oblong, grey-green on top, and the underside is an attractive rusty-gold. Light green, inconspicuous flowers bloom on catkin-like inflorescences late summer through fall. Fruits are spherical shells covered with sharp spines, containing three deliciously edible nuts, some compare with the flavor of hazelnuts.
