Aloe reitzii is an evergreen cactus / succulent with blue and green foliage. In summer orange and yellow flowers emerge. Features glaucous texture. Attracts beneficial insects and hummingbirds. Grows well with sun - bright shade and occasional - low water. Drought tolerant once established. Prefers to be dry in winter, dry when dormant. Does well in gritty, lean, rocky and well-drained soil. A good option if you're seeking something heat tolerant and verticillium wilt resistant.
Aloe reitzii, a stemless species native to South Africa's grassland area of Mpumalanga, presents a striking appearance with a single rosette standing up to 3 feet tall. Its robust stature is complemented by long, relatively broad silvery blue-green leaves adorned with reddish teeth along the margins. Sun-loving and slow-growing, it takes 5-10 years to reach flowering maturity. During summer, this aloe produces cylindrical racemes of dark red to orange-red flowers, each stem rising above the foliage for a spectacular display. Notably, Aloe reitzii blooms in summer, a departure from the typical winter flowering of aloes, making it a resilient choice for gardens prone to frost. Its flowering habit also distinguishes it from similar species like Aloe gerstneri and Aloe petricola. Endemic to a small area near the Belfast district of Mpumalanga, it holds a special place in South Africa's flora, with a winter-blooming variant found in the Vryheid District. Named in honor of Francis William Reitz, the former South African Minister of Agriculture, Aloe reitzii thrives in gardens, tolerating both frost and fire in its natural habitat. Propagation from seed is feasible but may require patience, as seed-grown plants can take up to seven years to mature and bloom. With its cold hardiness down to 20°F, it serves as a vibrant addition to dry gardens or as a striking container specimen, adding a splash of color to the early autumn landscape.
This plant has been grown in a 3ga pot. You will receive a very similar plant to the one in the picture. The plant is shipped "dry-root" (with out soil).
