Nursery contributed plant descriptions

South African perennial with pleated clumps of sword-shaped leaves that send up 4-6 foot high branched flower spikes of large, dazzling, orangey-yellow flowers in summer; back of wet border beauty…this baby likes it moist to wet in soggy soils with sun on its top! It also grows and flowers in just ordinary garden conditions. Tropical look, nice at water’s edge
Standing straight and bright green, the pleated all-season foliage forges a bold, sword-shaped presence for the back of the garden. Eye catching flower stems develop short side branches, each presenting several good-sized starry golden orange flowers with darker markings on their lower petals. This long blooming South African native is easy to grow in moist heavy soils, and for a real surprise, dig down to see its otherworldly, dayglow orange roots.
This tropicalesque plant makes a dramatic garden statement. Large flower spikes – up to 10 at a time - rise to 6’ tall and are covered with yellow 3/4" star-shaped flowers. The large sword-shaped leaves are attractively pleated. Found in marshes and along streams in South Africa, this plant is easy to grow in average garden soil or at the edge of a pond. Appreciates some compost though! Evergreen and blooms Spring through Summer. The rhizomatous roots can be used to make a reddish dye. To 2-3’ wide.
