What a name! Open rosettes of dark mahogany leaves on this hardy succulent for the rock wall, outdoor container, hellstrip, or random little nooks and/or crannies. Sun to half shade; sharp drainage. Plenty hardy! to -30F, USDA zone 4.
Historic garden plant with succulent foliage. Loose rosettes of dark brown to burgundy red leaves. Hens & Chicks grow best in well-drained, gravelly soil that is not wet in winter. Drought tolerant. Requires little water once established. Great in containers and rock gardens.
Sempervivum Chocolate Kiss forms large rosettes in luscious tones of warm, reddish burgundy browns. The dangerously collectible Chick Charms series offers the boldest coloured and best-growing hen and chicks available. Sempervivum are super hardy requiring only full sun and excellent, sharp drainage, especially in coastal BC. Grow them as an edger for pathways or borders or in pots.
We brought this very dark leaved cultivar back from CA a few years back, and thought it might be hardier than the tag gave credit (32 °F). Sempervivum 'Pacific Devil's Food' has wintered over in our large trough planters for 3 years now, and we have experienced temps well below zero, so we feel confident listing as hardy in zone 6, and it may in fact take colder zones. We like the fact that this selection holds its dark color even in the heat of summer. It is a little sheepish producing offsets, which grow to about 3-4" in width but none have ever flowered, which means they are long lived. Limited supply.
