Nursery contributed plant descriptions

A handsome (& useful) tree to 40-60': its 1-2'! compound leaves have an oniony taste boiled as a Chinese vegetable; its pendulous white flower clusters are fragrant and favored by bees, and the old bark peels in decorative strips. S/M
The Chinese Toon Tree, Toona sinensis, has many names including Beef and Onion Plant, Chinese Mahogany, and Chinese Cedear to name a few. A true Mahogany tree species, Chinese Toon is valued for its young, soft leaves which are enjoyed as a unique vegetable and herb. With a savory flavor much reminiscent of beef and onions, the young leaves are used parboiled or stir fried in a variety of dishes and it is a staple crop in southeast Asia. An ornamental tree in its own right, Chinese Toon quickly grows to up 80 feet in height and is adorned with pinnate leaves that emerge as a brilliant bronze color. Don’t panic at the potential size however, as this tree can be easily pruned and managed to stay at a reasonable size for regular harvesting of it’s tender new growth and some people even grow them as a potted patio plant. The Chinese Toon tree is remarkably cold hardy, being deciduous and and capable of withstanding severe winters. Cold hardy to USDA zone 5b, or to -15 degrees Fahrenheit.
