    Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Hakonechloa macra 'Beni-Kaze' is a Japanese selection that forms a flowing mound of green foliage that takes on striking red tones in the fall, earlier and more dramatically than the normal species. The cultivar name can be translated as 'red wind' which describes this plant’s autumn look perfectly.

Creating a graceful, rippling stream of soft-green all summer long and becoming a symphony of reds in the fall when the blades of this 2-3' clumper turn shades of crimson and scarlet. The Japanese translation means 'Red Wind' which seems a perfect descriptor for this stunning forest grass, especially when it is seen softly undulating in the breeze. This grass makes a perfect groundcover for partial shade; if not cut back the blades are a soft-tan color for winter interest. PSh-S/M

NEW! The Japanese translation is 'Red Wind' which is perfect for this gorgeous forest grass…Breezy, flowing & graceful green through the summer but in fall when the weather cools the blades glow with shades of autumn garnet, scarlet and cerise! Promised to be a little more vigorous than other varieties (which are so slow…) time will tell! 2’ tall x 3’ wide? Sun to part shade, average garden conditions.

    By: Secret Garden Growers

A slow growing Japanese forest grass that forms a mound. Newly grown leaf blades are green whereas older leaves are red.

Hakonechloa macra 'Beni-Kaze' is a clump-forming deciduous grass that displays upright, arching foliage. The broad green, grass-like foliage takes on a red hue as the season progresses. Ornamental Grasses are low maintenance and grow well in most soil types. They look beautiful, adding amazing color, height and motion to your garden. An excellent companion plant with contrasting foliage.

This green foliage grass has purple markings on the blades. A nice change from the golden foliaged cultivars.

A gracefull 2' green grass that turns wonderful shades of red in the fall. Good color in the shade.

For those of us who prefer the solid green form of Japanese Forest Grass, we now have this new selection from Japan that takes on attractive red tones in the fall. It grows to a similar height and spread as do other Hakonechloa, which is roughly 2' high and 3' wide, albeit not as fast as we would like.

    By: Avant Gardens

A very hard-to-find Japanese selection. It forms a flowing mound of green foliage that takes on striking red tones in the fall. The cultivar name can be translated as “red wind,” which describes this plant's autumn look perfectly. 24-36” x 24-36”.
