Native to the mountains of Italy and Austria, this vigorous ground covering species spreads by rhizomes fairly quickly, 6-8” tall stems are semi-evergreen to deciduous; heart-shaped foliage emerges pink and is deep red-bronze in fall. Flowers in spring above foliage, bright red sepals with yellow petals; tolerant of dry shade in light shade in average soil; nice small scale ground cover.
