Nursery contributed plant descriptions

The most fragrant of all the Penstemons the enormous baggy pink honey scented flowers sit atop clasp leafed stems to 4', it is native to the Pinyon Juniper Joshua Tree communities and is an excellent plant for xeriscaping.
An herbaceous perennial with erect growth to 4-6 ft. high when in bloom. Showy cream to pale pink flowers on tall spikes are intensely fragrant with a sweet scent. Great for birds, butterflies, and especially bumblebees, which are excellent pollinators who love to crawl into the flowers that are large and round, hence the common name, Balloon flower. Many people who see this plant in bloom think it is a foxglove--very showy! Broad, toothed leaves up to 3" long are covered with a grayish, bluish, or whitish waxy coating or bloom that is easily rubbed off. Very drought tolerant (this species is native to hot, dry desert mountains), it will thrive where many other plants in need of more moisture cannot. Native to California and is also found outside of California, but is confined to western North America. Penstemons are considered desirable forages for deer, antelope, and birds either as herbage or seed. They may also provide some cover for selected small bird species. Native Americans long used penstemon roots to relieve toothache. Found in found in desert mountains growing in washes and canyon floors. Communitites located in Joshua Tree Woodland, Pinyon-Juniper Woodland Between 3608 and 7545 feet .
I'll start by quoting Robert Nold in Penstemons "one of the glories of the plant kingdom" An evergreen clump forming perennial, adapted to life in the harsh conditions of the North American south west. Found in impoverished, dry, clay soils it should prove a winner in WA, it's deep roots effectively drought proofing it. During summer, highly fragrant, pink, balloon-like flowers crowd one side of the tall slender stems, the bases of which are clothed with large, toothed, silver-blue leaves. You need this in your garden.

Blooms: summer, white-pink with pruple-red markings, clumping, gray foliage. Zone 2-10, PNW, sun, summer-dry, well drained
This is a sensational Penstemon native to the high desert of eastern California. Very tall, the branching flower spikes can reach 5’ tall! Blooming in Summer, the very showy, large pink flowers are fragrant & have beautiful nectar guides in their throats. The base foliage is grayish & itself grows to 2’ tall. Fairly easy to grow, it loves hot & dry & good drainage, though it’s said to tolerate clay quite well. Needs NO SUMMER WATER ONCE ESTABLISHED. A good habitat plant, it is loved by bumblebees. California Native. To 5’x4’.
