Nursery contributed plant descriptions

My #1 favorite Hakea...this week :-) This is a tree-like shrub to around 9-12' h and slightly less wide. The flowers begin to erupt in fall and continue through the cooler months along the stem and branches. They contrast well against the reddish trunk and rigid, eucalyptus-like, leaves. The seed pods that follow the flowers are just as interesting. They form in clusters and open up from time to time reminding me of little woody muppets. While not overly fussy about soils, it does prefer good drainage. Full sun produces lots of flowers and a fuller form. This is a fast-growing plant so be sure to tip prune while young to create a fuller look. Hardy to at least 26 °F.
