Single golden yellow flowers. Some of the plants will have purple spots or streaks. Most of the plants will bloom this year.
Winter Jewels™ hellebores are from a hand-selected seed strain, thus, as seedlings, each plant produces a slight variation in color and highlights. 'Golden Sunrise' leaves add interest to the winter garden. Handle drought conditions, once established. Deer resistant. Plant 18" to 20" apart.
Another new, large-flowering hellebore from Oregon's own master hybridizer, Marietta O'Byrne. 'Golden Sunrise' has a youthful combination of single, clear yellow petals with cheerful dark red picotee freckling and veining! To 18" tall and 24" wide. Perfect for woodland areas in part shade where it can spread out. Flowers, which can appear as early as January and last until April, are downward facing and large, almost 3" across! Trim old leaves to the ground in late winter before the buds emerge to allow flowers maximum impact. Very cold hardy. Zone 5.
Yellow has been one of the most challenging colours to breed into hellebores. One of the world's top hybridizers, Marietta O'Byrne has created this wonderful group of single yellows called Golden Sunrise. These buttery yellows often have red spotting, red picotee edges or a red central star and the occasional apricot flush! As with all strains the exact colour and flower shape will vary. Every plant is unique. Deer resistant. Perennial Plant of the Year 2005.
