Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Spikes of long drooping fragrant white flowers are produced in late spring and early summer that are excellent for pollinators like bees. Peter's Peach Creek Virginia Sweetspire was selected by Peter Loos for its longer flowering season and its nearly evergreen foliage that can turn fiery shades of yellow, orange, and red in especially cold winters. This selection originates from the southwestern most portion of this easy to grow native shrub's range. Virginia Sweetspire is a naturally suckering, normally deciduous shrub well suited for use in gardens, landscapes, as well as natural areas. Utilize this Sweetspire as a mass planting where its fragrant white flowers and evergreen to fiery colored fall foliage can be enjoyed at its maximum. Even though it is most commonly found in moist areas, Virginia Sweetspire is adaptable to average soil moisture levels once well-established. It can grow in shaded sites but will be the densest growth, the best winter color, and flower the best where it gets more than half of a day of direct sunlight. Virginia Sweetspire ranges naturally from eastern Texas, throughout the Southeastern US, as far north as New Jersey and Pennsylvania. This is an easy to grow native shrub that will sucker and colonize eventually developing into a mass of stems, foliage, and flowers.
