Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Large tight clusters, reaching up to 4-6" across, of orange flowers sit atop sturdy curving 18-24" stems that emerge in early spring just before and as the new foliage is unfurling. A rare and unusual South African beauty, the Paintbrush Lily is a shade loving bulb for well-drained, lightly shaded sites and is a close cousin of the Blood Lily or Football Lily, Scadoxus multiflorus. Provide the Paintbrush Lily with consistent moisture during the growing season and dryer conditions during dormancy. Where not hardy this spectacular Amaryllis cousin can be easily enjoyed as a container plant. A terracotta container with a humus rich but sandy or gravelly soil might be ideal. At maturity a 12" container should be sufficient, and periodic repotting in late summer would be the only real maintenance.
