Nursery contributed plant descriptions

From large dense clusters of light green calyxes emerge large, velvety purple tubular flowers at the ends of tall sturdy stems beginning in late summer and continuing until frost or nearly year round in mild, freeze free climates. Margie Griffith is a large and vigorous growing Salvia with medium green foliage on a fairly full plant. In mild, freeze free winter regions it is reported to flower throughout much of the year. Named in memory of her dear friend, this big showy Salvia was hybridized and selected by Donna Dittman of LSU. Excellent for hummingbirds! Margie Griffith Salvia is a hybrid of Salvia mexicana x S. involucrata. The parents are considered tender perennials in zone 8 if provided with a well-drained soil and a light breathable, protective mulch will help to ensure its survival in the colder portions of zone 8.
