Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Large, 4", primrose yellow flowers with a dark, nearly black, burgundy eye are borne from summer to fall. When grown from seed it can become a large shrub to small tree-like in mild winter climates (zones 10 and warmer) but is a die-back perennial in zones 9A/B to 8B. Large deep olive green to a rich deep green foliage has velvety pubescence. Can be grown in full sun but most sources suggest that it should be given afternoon shade and may need good drainage in acid to mildly acidic soils for the best performance. In zones 8 and 9 where the Lemon-Yellow Hibiscus may be grown as a perennial it should be established in the garden in spring once all danger of frost has past and the ground temperature has begun to warm. This will give it ample time to grow and establish a large root system and base from which to return from the following spring. Choosing a site with a well-draining soil and providing a loose breathable mulch will also help to ensure its survival. The flowers and foliage of Hibiscus calyphyllus are sometimes cooked and eaten by native tribes in Tropical Africa where this is an escaped invasive species as well as its native Temperate Asia. May reach 9-12'H in frost free climates. It is suggested that the hairs growing on the leaves and stems of this plant may cause some discomfort when pruning or handling. Use caution and wear the proper clothing when doing such chores.
