Nursery contributed plant descriptions

An important nectar and pollen plant for Heliconius butterflies such as the Zebra Longwing, Julia, and other butterfly species who use the pollen to help extend their lifespan. The flowers are also utilized by bees, hummingbirds, and other pollinators. This unusual member of the Cucumber family produces medium to large clusters of pumpkin orange male and single or few flowered clusters of female flowers that open flat atop a long tube (salverform). Male flowers may be produced year round under good conditions and normally only one sex of flowers is open at the time. The thick, glossy green leaves of Psiguria are quite variable and can be trifoliate to simple all on the same plant. The vine itself can get woody over time and the plant may go into a period of dormancy if an extended drought occurs dying back to the woody portion of the plant.
