From as early as late spring and often into fall 1" wide elegant orchid-like flowers in shades of violet, purple, and lavender are borne in what are often fairly large spike-like clusters at the ends of the gracefully arching to upright stems. The faded flowers of the rare Blue Orchid Vine are followed by small round winged butterfly-like seed pods that are similar to those of the Yellow Butterfly Vine. A twining, woody, naturally evergreen tropical vine, that has been blessed with a variety of colorful common names, Mascagnia lilacina is considered hardy to about 15 °F for short periods once plants are well established and it can easily be maintained as a container plant where not hardy.
