Opening Day Doublefile Viburnum is our plant mascot - we just opened! There are a lot of Viburnum plicatum var. plicatum cultivars in circulation, but the leaves on Opening Day are my favorite - they are highly corrugated-puckered (interesting texture for designers to use), handsome bright green all summer, then turning red then dark burgundy in autumn. Fall color is magnificent. Plus, Opening Day has these red petioles that are like a touch of skilled trim that make superior tailoring stand out. The leaves in general have that certain "something" that make this plant special. Flowers are white mopheads that start out green, then open pure white. We think they are probably sterile and won't produce fruits, so this is not a Viburnum for the birds. This cultivar is a seedling of some of the rare fruits of Spellbound. Main Difference is that Opening Day has larger flowers on a smaller shrub, 8-10' tall. The leaf stems (petioles) are redder on Opening Day and the leaves are a little more corrugated. Both are favorites of ours and, though similar, we offer them as options for your design pallets. We welcome feedback under the "Reviews" tab on which is your favorite. Opening Day Doublefile Viburnum is another First Editions® plant developed in Georgia.
