A perfect contrasting wine-red addition to an otherwise very green salad; also a rare blast of color in the veggie garden, or mixed into containers with ornamentals. On Organic Gardening’s list of top 10 test varieties of 2010. The sword-shaped leaves are upright, making it possible to grow the lettuces tightly together, creating the appearance of a sea of red. You can harvest a whole head as usual, but if you snip off the young lettuce leaves a couple of inches above ground (do not damage the crown), it will vigorously re-sprout & provide several more harvests. Exceptionally heat tolerant!
