Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Summer squashes often take up a lot of space, but a new group of very compact squashes has opened up possibilities. If you have space for a wine barrel, you also have the space to grow ‘Balmoral’. If grown in a barrel, this patty pan type will grow around 2’ tall & wide. If grown in the ground it will stay very compact, appealing 2-3’ feet instead of sprawling. Its openness makes it very easy to see & pick the squashes before they get too big & enjoy the huge golden flowers. The squashes are a beautiful flying saucer shape with scalloped edges, a tender green color maturing to creamy white. Start harvesting them at 3-4” & don’t let them get big if you want ongoing production. The best part: they’re totally delicious! Making the plant small did not diminish the flavor. Plant in well fertilized soil & keep them consistently watered. Supplement with manure or compost tea to improve health & production.
