Nursery contributed plant descriptions

RARE and amazing, this glorious species from the mountains of Columbia’s cloud forests has almost disappeared due to deforestation. Spectacular 8” spikes on red stems emerge from fuzzy bright red calyces into 2.5” bright scarlet tubular open-mouthed blooms. The calyces remain for quite a while after the flowers drop looking mighty showy in themselves! Blooms year-round here with most blooms occurring winter thru spring. Multi-branching to 6’ tall and 4’ across with 4-5” fuzzy heart shaped foliage. Compost amended soil. Best in areas with mild, cool summers we think. Ours overwintered with short light nighttime frosts. Can be grown in large containers (20+ gal.). Hummingbird magnet! Deer resistant. Place where it can receive protection from hot afternoon sun. Looks best with a good annual pruning to keep it more compact and bushy.
