Mimetes chrysanthus

Drumroll, please! Here’s the amazing & stupefying cousin to the nursery's MOST popular denizen (Mimetes cucullatus) – with a very important feature that sets it apart from most of Protea-kind: it will grow in the garden. That's right! Some soil amendment (so that it drains well) is required & a low phosphorus diet is probably smart, but we've put a bit of compost on our mother plant with no ill effects. Year-round water on the light to average side is good, too. Discovered in 1987, this ultra-rare South African species bears golden flowers, symmetrically arranged at the ends of evergreen branches each Fall & periodically through the rest of the year. Grows to 6' high & 4’ wide. In the wild, there are less than 2000 specimens of this plant & we’re so very lucky to have this first big crop to share! Hopefully, future endeavors to grow these will be as fruitful as this one, but if not - this may be your only chance to grab one for yourself!
