Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Native to dry, rocky sites in limestone areas of Yunnan, China, this 6-8' shrub needs only sun and good drainage to produce its late-spring sublime, fragrant, single, deep-red, yellow-centered flowers with lovely purple stamens. Perfect in mixed beds or as a specimen, it is attractive all season with its finely divided leaves and red stems. S/M/GDr
A more rare species of several that are considered 'Tree Peonies,' the Maroon Tree Peony grows woody branches which produce additional branches in each subsequent season, unlike the common peony which dies to the ground each winter. Rose-shaped flowers appear on the branches in the early spring as the new growth is emerging, often blooming for extended periods of time. These are very attractive bushes and grow very dense, especially when pruned regularly. When pruning, always cut through last season's growth and leave at least three nodes on each stem, otherwise the plant might not grow as dense as possible. Dormant buds usually will not open on growth several years old.
This peony species is very resistant to most fungal and viral problems that are normally associated with peonies, and is therefore a good choice if you want peonies to grow in an area where infection has been before.

Two varieties are listed, the typical and original variety has maroon-red flowers and 'Lemon Yellow' is a cultivar which is identical except for bright yellow flowers.

Propagation
This species propagates through division of stems in fall or spring. Plants spread through stolons (underground roots which travel a foot or more and send up a new stem, similar to a rhizome) and the new plantlets can be dug starting in their second year.

This plant looks very much like P. ludlowii var. 'Lutea' but, rather than the brilliant yellow flowers, P. delavayi will have deep maroon flowers. The 6-8' shrub will have multiple trunks and spectacular green foliage all summer. In the fall the leaves will turn bright yellow. The plant is very hardy as well as being a beautiful shrub.
(TREE PEONY) Rare species tree peony, the grandmother of all fabulous tree peonies! Woody branches form a bush like structure 5’ tall and 3’ wide…attractive glaucous, deeply cut foliage with reddish hues give a tropical tone. In May, behold the lustrous nodding deep dark burgundy flowers with yellow stamens…did I mention fragrant?! A deciduous woody paeonia for well drained soils. Ours thrives in non-fertile super sandy loam in full sun with little water and total neglect and is beautiful! USDA Z6-8
Paeonia franchetti #167 - A halda wild collection at 2600 meters I'm a bit confused as it now seems to be listed as x franchetii P. lutea x potaninii. I leave the taxonomy to you it is still a cool plant ZONE 4
Named after Pierre Jean Marie Delavay, a French missionary and avid plant collector who resided in China during the late 1800s, this gorgeous, rarely cultivated Peony showcases lavish burgundy blossoms amid splendid foliage. The slightly nodding, dark shiny flowers are fragrant and brightened by a large central cluster of yellow stamens. Strong, red-tinted upright stems and deciduous, deeply cut glaucous green leaves sculpt an undemanding, long-lived elegant shrub. The Maroon Tree Peony handles spring frosts, needs a pruning to maintain its bushy habit and appreciates a cool, moist sheltered site with a generous helping of well rotted manure.
Although they are not trees but rather shrubs, the common name is so ingrained that they are pretty much stuck with it. Gorgeous flowers, about 4" across, in different shades of dark reds. The handsome foliage is deeply divided and has pinkish-red stalks,
Blooms: spring, dark red, gold anthers/ deciduous shrub, deeply cut Zone 6-9. 6', China, part shade-sun, moist, well drained
Purple flowers.
Openly branched plant with fine leaves and nodding dark reddish to pale orange flower. Deciduous shrub 4' x 4'
