The cinnamon fern has a vase shape. The 2' fronds arch out to 18”. The light green fronds don't have spores. The center fruiting stems get 2' tall and are cinnamon colored. This deciduous fern has beautiful yellow fall color.
A showy fern native to the eastern Americas and East Asia, excellent for native shade gardens, bogs, rain gardens, and wet areas along ponds and streams. They generally grow to 2-3ft, but with sufficient moisture may stand 5-6ft tall. Fertile fronds stiffly appear in early spring, quickly turning cinnamon brown, which contrasts beautifully with its yellowish-green, erect, pinnately-compound, sterile foliage. The cinnamon colored fertile fronds, and fibers around the base of these unique plants are what inspired the name. The fibrous roots are used to make Osmunda fiber or orchid peat, a soil alternative for epiphytic plants such as some orchids and bromeliads. PSh-Sh/M-W

Ahhhh, the Osmunda gang, my favorite genus of ferns.
Perennial fern native to the North and South Americas, as well as Eastern Asia. Named after the fertile fronds it produces in spring or early summer. Lush green sterile fronds turn golden yellow in the fall. Growth Rate slow

An unmistakable fern in which the spores are produced on separate stems (rather than on the backs of the fronds) that rise up into the vase of light green foliage. These turn the colour of cinnamon. Great for a shaded garden and moist to average soils. Deciduous. The fiddleheads are sometimes steamed and eaten in spring, though ostrich fern, Matteucia struthiopteris, is the more common culinary fern.
The cinnamon-brown fruiting stalks give this fern its name. One of the largest and most dramatic of our native ferns, Osmunda cinnamomea looks best when placed in the back of the woodland garden. Unlike some large ferns, Cinnamon Fern does not spread rapidly by rhizomes. Prefers moist, neutral to acid soil, in sun or shade. Hardy from Zones 3 - 9.
Osmunda cinnamonea is native to boggy areas, growing 24-36" tall with yellow to dark green waxy fronds...partial shade.
Deciduous, cinnamon colored fertile fronds, rusty hairs on fronds Zone 2-9. 2'-5', Eastern US, part shade-shade, moist, well drained
Upright, arching plume-like green sterile fronds w/ attractive, cinnamon colored fertile fronds in the center. Makes a showy display. Plant in partial sun to full shade & moist soil. Zones 2 to 10. Height: 3 to 5 feet tall. Deciduous.
A robust, clumping fern that gains its name for its bright cinnamon colored fronds shows a wide tolerance in soil types including swampy soil types.
