The bright-green, needle-like leaves of this graceful open 8' x 12' shrub provide year-round beauty and the long dense clusters of red flowers are a wonderful highlight in spring. S/M
Vigorous, rounded shrub to 8' high and wide bearing dark green needle-like leaves. Bright pinkish-red waxy flowers appear most of the year, and especially in winter and spring. Plants adapt well to shade and most soil types, and are useful for screening and hedging, and even for controlling foot traffic. Hardy in most coastal California gardens and tolerant of long periods of drought, this is a tough, dependable shrub.
One of the nicest and easiest of the Grevillea clan, a cross of G. juniperina x G. rosmarinifolia by P. Moore of Canberra, Australia. To 4-6 ft tall x 10 ft wide with needle-like leaves on arching branches. The saturated rosy red flowers appear in winter and continue through spring with sporadic reblooming over the summer. Best in full sun, well-drained soil, and little or no summer water once established. As with all proteas, beware of fertilizers that contain phosphorous. Frost hardy in mid USDA zone 8.
Upright evergreen shrub with prickly leaves, screaming red flowers much of year. This popular variety has narrow deep green leaves and an angular, upright habit to about 9' tall and 12' wide, perhaps larger over time. Red flowers appear at the branch tips over a long period, never failing to attract hummingbirds regardless of what else is blooming. One of the pricklier Grevilleas, this is the one to plant if you want to stop those pesky neighbor kids from intruding your cactus garden. 'Canberra Gem' has a proven track record in the Pacific Northwest and in the South, as old, mature specimens can be found in Victoria, BC and in central Alabama. Hardy to at least 5 °F. Australia.
Dense racemes of waxy pinkish-red flowers.
