Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Viola canadensis is native to Alaska, Canada, and the rich woodlands and river banks of the lower 48 states of the United States. Although it is native, I personally have never seen it in the wild, but I wouldn't object to it. It is often called "Tall White Violet," as it can grow to 14 inches. The flower is white with a yellow center and central violet veining, with a purple tinge on the backs of the flowers. The flowers are solitary, but more than one flowering stem may rise that will flower at the same time. I have read that it reseeds heavily, but I have been growing it for a few years now and have yet to see a seed pod or a seed. I wouldn't object to that either.
Probably my favorite native Viola. It's a tall grower, 12-18" and prefers moist shade, but can take a little sun. From the axils of its deep green, cordate foliage come slightly fragrant, white flowers with a yellow splotch and deep purple veining late Spring through early Summer.
